Job Description

Vicky is looking to recruit an experienced, highly motivated Senior Parliamentary Assistant to join her Westminster office.

The role will focus on supporting Vicky’s work and interests in Parliament across a range of policy areas.

Applicants should have a detailed understanding of the daily workings and processes of Parliament. They should also be able to work well as part of a small team as well as independently. A flexible approach to hours is needed as there may be times when later work in the evening will required as per Parliamentary business.

Outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability to manage a large and varied workload effectively. Local knowledge of the Chelmsford area would be helpful.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A high level of attention to detail, with excellent organisational skills
  • A flexible nature with the ability to adapt quickly
  • Competence across a range of IT systems, including Microsoft Office
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks, including supporting other team members, research, preparing speeches and articles

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Monitoring the inbox and flagging for team members
  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure the Member is accurately informed on key issues
  • Liaising on Constituency campaigns in order to flag in Parliament in form of question in the House or other
  • Horizon scanning to identify opportunities to pursue topics of local importance and to progress priority campaigns
  • To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
  • on project work as required including speech writing as required
  • Maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, including impact on the local constituency
  • Be aware of importance of relationships and contact with lobby and special interest media to promote the MP’s work and campaigns
  • Research local, regional, national or international issues to support the MPs’ work
  • To advise and ensure the MP is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House
  • To produce and present high quality written reports, briefing notes, and professional advice
  • Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed
  • Liaise with Government agencies, voluntary sector and others

Requirements:

  • Experience of working in Parliament and knowledge of the resources available to MPs
  • Experience of political social media management
  • Outstanding written and verbal skills, with keen attention to detail
  • Ability to complete work quickly, to a high standard, often under pressure
  • Professionalism, diplomacy, and political awareness are essential
  • There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours, including assisting with events with the MP as requested
  • Some travel to the constituency will be required
